FROM ROOT TO LEAF
Roots is a well known Canadian clothing brand, so much so that if you’re caught wearing a Roots sweater in London in the UK, you may well be stopped in the street by a Canadian visitor or expat asking where you’re from in Canada.
ALLEGORY OF THE BAD GOVERNMENT
I usually steer clear of politics. Far too depressing. But, during research for some work that touches on mental health and nature (specifically woodland) and how it can heal and calm the demons in your head, I discovered a book called, ‘Monsters - A Bestiary of the Bizarre’
Father’s Day
It’s been a tough few weeks if I’m honest, and today is really bringing it home. My father’s funeral was just this Friday. After surviving two and a half years through Covid in a dementia care home, he died in the end, from an entirely unrelated infection.
Art Aid Ukraine
I'm delighted to be donating a work to Art Aid Ukraine - an exhibition and on-line auction event being organised to help raise funds to send medical supplies to Ukrainian hospitals.
Ice Patrol
I’ve wanted to make some work about HMS Protector for a while now and signing up for an online course in artist’s bookbinding with Domestika recently, gave me the perfect excuse to begin thinking about how I might approach the subject.
The Big Freeze
Last Thursday saw the launch of the inaugural Big Freeze Art Festival which is being organised and run by Charlotte Connelly, museum curator at The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) in Cambridge.
Twitter Art Exhibit
Something a little different. This is my entry for the 2021 Twitter Art Exhibition in aid of The Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy Fund (LINC)
Shadow and Dust
I visited Titian at the National Gallery last week and on my way out, following the Covid-friendly one-way exit route, the dark, gnarly shadows of a small painting in Room 44, caught my eye…
Wild on the Inside
As someone whose main artistic interest is the natural environment, it might seem odd to live in a city. But, I love living in London. I’ve been here now for over twenty years and having been born in the southwest and raised in the northeast…
Eyes on the Horizon
Keeping my head stock still, I dart my eyes from left to right, wondering if I do it quickly enough, I might trick them into focusing on more of the horizon than I can actually see. It doesn’t work.
Liquid Rock
“Formed by standing surface water acidic enough to dissolve surrounding rock into clay, mudpots have a similar structure to hot springs, but with a lower water supply…”
Touching Ice
My upcoming exhibition, Touching Ice will showcase work completed since returning from Antarctica as Artist in Residence for The Friends of The Scott Polar Research Institute.
The Shackleton Symphony
I’m honoured and thrilled to announce a very special recorded performance of the Shackleton Symphony at the private view for my upcoming exhibition, Touching Ice.
Scaling Up
When you return from Antarctica I think there is an understandable, natural urge as an artist to ‘go big’ - to try and relay the incredible sense of scale that you witness when you’re there. I have battled with this over the past year.
