I’ve wanted to make some work about HMS Protector for a while now and signing up for an online course in artist’s bookbinding with Domestika recently, gave me the perfect excuse to begin thinking about how I might approach the subject.

When you return from Antarctica I think there is an understandable, natural urge as an artist to ‘go big’ - to try and relay the incredible sense of scale that you witness when you’re there. I have battled with this over the past year.

I found out last week that I have been selected as the Friends of The Scott Polar Research Institute’s Artist in Residence for 2016 and this coming March, I will be joining the crew of HMS Protector on her journey south to the Antarctic.
